Defend Cumberland is a community-based group actively working in opposition to this proposed project.

Initially, Defend Cumberland formed to amplify community concern in Cumberland because the unincorporated community is across the street from the project property line and would be significantly impacted by mining operations and truck traffic. When the environmental review process was started in 2024, the impacts to the region were concerning to communities, agencies, and stakeholders beyond the Cumberland residents. Defend Cumberland welcomes everyone who wants to protect the Green River Gorge, the health of the Green River, and rural health and safety.

Defend Cumberland is a nonprofit organization fiscally sponsored by Green River Coalition.
